The "Crime Paintings" of Filmmaker John Thornton
My wife and I were held up at gunpoint back in the winter of 1994. It was very traumatizing for Nancy and me, but we lived to tell the tale, unlike so many other victims of American gun culture.
But still the experience left me feeling profoundly powerless, and precipitated this body of work.
I know artists who are major narrative figure painters. And their vision of humanity is often heroic, noble, and tragic.
My view of humanity, at least as expressed in these paintings, is the opposite. My characters are weak, self serving, and either frightened or violent. My conceptual model for this world view is Tom Stoppard’s amazing play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead” which focuses on two...

Artist Janice Merendino, Ducktown, an Atlantic City Immigration Story
Просмотров 596Месяц назад
Artist Janice Merendino's exhibition called “Ducktown: An Atlantic City Immigration Story” is both beautiful and life affirming. A granddaughter of immigrants, Janice went to visit the neighborhood where she grew up and found that the new residents have much in common with her own family history. Her beautiful art and uplifting stories should be seen and heard by all Americans. In a challenging...
Lynne and John
Просмотров 412Месяц назад
Lynne Campbell and John Cevcik met at PAFA and had a wonderful bond. Tragically, Lynne lost her beloved John earlier this year. Back in 2012, I made a movie about a party at artist Dick Ranck's studio. I found footage that I shot that day featuring just John and Lynne and made this movie for her. John was talented artist, playwright, poet, and even played the guitar. The music in this short mov...
PAFA ASE 2024, Problems and Promises

On Friday May 10th I went to see the Pennsylvania Academy’s 2024 Annual Student Exhibition. It’s another very exciting show, but this has been a very tumultuous year in the Academy’s long history. Both the BFA and MFA programs will be winding down and there is uncertainty as to what the future of the school will be. It’s been said that the Academy has an unbroken line going back to 1805. My fer...
Nature, Spirit, Family, and Gratitude, The Awesome Paintings of Bethann Parker

Martha Armstrong, a Painter of Well Loved Places

Though I have admired her work for decades, I finally have my chance to make a movie about painter Martha Armstrong. Just as some figurative artists only paint people they know, Martha’s show of landscapes at Gross McCleaf features places dear to her heart. She told me a story about that.
Thinking about Painting & Photography, The Don and John Show

When Louis Daguerre invented the first photographic process in 1839, it was as if an earthquake shook the foundations of the art world. Upon seeing a daguerreotype, The British painter Joseph Turner allegedly said, "This is the end of Art. I am glad I have had my day." But of course, Turner was wrong, and representational painting has never gone away. So how have painters used this technology?

Mickayel Thurin, Adding Joy to Art
Просмотров 3823 месяца назад
One of my most enjoyable video projects was a movie I made 2 years ago about Mickayel Thurin and her artistic family. So it’s great to catch up with them again and see Micka’s dazzling new show at Gross McCleaf. Her inventiveness with composition and materials is peerless. The joyfulness of her art is hard won, and to me that’s why it’s so profoundly moving. Micka understands all too well that ...

I was a part of the BFA program and graduated in 2013. Somehow I forgot that I was a part of the first class...? Anyway - While I was there I could feel the shifting focus from the traditional certificate experience into becoming just like every other art school (for the worse). I think closing the BFA/MFA program is not a bad idea, as long as it means the old system is restored.

I took my daughter to several galleries in Wellfleet, inc Blue Heron. We saw, we paused, we studied-- your work! We were impressed by your technique and the results. I see lots of artists work, but rarely do I connect so immediately that I commit the artist's name to memory to later further investigate the artist's journey. The bees, crystals, dry pigment technique is next level, produces such a rich effect. I really appreciate how much credit you give to Lisa and your kids, extended family for their deep and visible support. Community is important for baking and enjoying scones or making incredible art. Wonderful. Thank you.

Both present an insightful vision of a spectator who wants to share the experience. Your videos make my day and I always look forward to their arrival. Good story that adds to the great History Of Ducktown. I wish it would have given some additional context for the neighborhood roots. As an immigration story the Ducktown Neighborhood cannot be separated from St. Michael’s Church ,School, And Theater. No Church no culture, no Families, no great memories that you shared. Ironically enough, this vocal cadence is the same ones that I hear while watching "King of the Hill". Light, ever-pleasing, never angry, zero disagreements. Basically a grown woman using an appeasing child's cadence and vocal tone to not seem "to aggressive/angry/rude/disagreeing."

I enjoy your documentaries so much John! They really fill my well :). This news is very sad, indeed. It had me scratching my head when I heard you describe yourself as a "Pompous Ass" (PAFA PASS) and later a "Pompous windbag", which I know was just a dip in the doc volume.... but it made me chortle! You're never pompous! Your docs + eerie music give me so much pleasure! Cheer up dear friend. The news may be bad but your work never is. Nina, Waving from Toronto

She knows how to load her brush and make a bold, summery, strongly yet unpredictably patterned statement. They have a vividness that isn't a fleeting moment captured, nor yet eternity. Looks like time slowed down just enough so she could finish her work and that work a testimony and act of appreciation for whatever caught her eye. I like them.

This is a great summary of where America's oldest art institution stands, and the work it has traditionally produced. Degree or non-degree, it's a damn shame PAFA is in its current state of uncertain suspension. The artwork and the students appear to remain amazingly upbeat. And John, your optimism is just what the doctor ordered. Fingers crossed for a full recovery.
